Can I throw my used green tea leaves in the garden?

We all know that green tea is good for our health in a large number of ways. However, green tea is not only good for us. Green tea leaves can also be a very healthy addition to the plants in your garden diet.

Adding green tea leaves to your garden

Green tea is very high in nitrogen, which is vital for plant survival, as it is abundant in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the compound that enables plants to use energy from the sun to produce sugar from water and carbon dioxide (photosynthesis).

Nitrogen is also one of the main elements of the amino acids that make up proteins. A lack of protein can cause the plant to wilt and eventually die.

In addition, green tea leaves contain high levels of phosphorus and potassium. These are equally important for all different kinds of plants. Most importantly, green tea leaves in the garden also help plants retain water and deter weeds.

Tea leaves can further enrich the soil of your garden

When you add these leaves to your garden, not only do they provide nitrogen to your plants, helping them grow faster, healthier and stronger, but they also become food for earthworms, helping to improve the overall quality of the soil.

Green tea leaves act as a natural fertiliser or manure. This can be achieved directly in several simple ways:

You can sprinkle a thin layer of green tea leaves around the base of your plants, concentrating mainly on acid-friendly plants such as roses, tomatoes or blueberries.

These types of plants thrive in acidic soil. Green tea leaves produce this substance, but as long as you use them carefully it will only add a small amount of acidity to your garden and benefit a variety of plant species.

Simply sprinkle an appropriate amount of green tea leaves directly onto the soil of your garden. Then, gently mix it into the soil.

Place the biodegradable tea bags under the soil.

As well as helping your gardening, you can also use Japanese green tea in your bath! That's it.

Soak used green tea bags in a spray bottle for about a week or until the water starts to change colour. Use this green tea mixture to water your garden. This also works for indoor plants.

After steeping the green tea bags it is important to throw them away, as the leaves will eventually attract parasites, just as they can attract beneficial worms. However, before throwing them away, wipe all the leaves of your plants with a wet tea bag to give them a little more life.

Put green tea bags in with compost to add nutrients

You can simply add green tea leaves to your regular compost pile for extra nutrients. They also help to speed up the breakdown of the other ingredients in the compost heap. Earthworms eat the leaves and process them to produce a nutrient-rich fertiliser for your garden.

If the green tea bag is biodegradable (make sure it's the first one), you can add it to your compost bin too!

If the bag is not biodegradable? This means it contains a polypropylene coating which is bad for the planet. Remember that even biodegradable tea bags often come with labels and staples that must be removed before the composting process.

When using green tea leaves for edible fruit and vegetables, please use this method in your garden. This is because applying green tea leaves directly to the soil during the active growing cycle can affect the pH balance and flavour of the crop.

Now you may start to regret all those green teas you used to throw away those precious tea bags without a second thought. But don't worry! We've done it all.
